Softball loses twice in final day at Auburn Classic

Bearcats defeated 6-5 by Campbell, 11-1 by host Tigers

AUBURN, Ala. – Binghamton (1-8) concluded its stay at the War Eagle Classic with a pair of defeats against stiff competition. The Bearcats lost 6-5 to Campbell (7-2) as well as 11-1 to host Auburn (9-2) in five innings. Sunday's scheduled game against Bradley was canceled due to the impending weather.

For the second day in a row, the Bearcats belted four home runs. Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey hit two of them, while graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough and junior outfielder Maddy Dodig hit the other two.

McDonough hit a team-best .571 during the day (4-for-7) while Dodig was 1-for-3 (.333) and drew three walks to post a .545 on-base percentage. Also batting .333 were Carey and junior catcher Elisa Allen - both of whom finished the two games 2-for-6.

In the end, however, it was a sixth-inning rally by the Camels in the first game and a 13-hit attack by the Tigers in the nightcap that proved decisive.

Against Campbell, the Bearcats were down 3-0 before coming up with four runs in the top of the third inning. McDonough and Carey each belted a two-run home run during that frame.

Dodig padded the lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run. It was her second homer in as many days.

The Camels, however, used a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning by Allyiah Swiney to take a 6-5 lead. The Bearcats then left the tying run on second base when the game ended in the top of the seventh inning.

Katelyn Hubley improved to 3-1 with the win while senior pitcher Brianna Roberts dropped to 1-3 with the defeat. Roberts, however, now has 398 career strikeouts and is tied for third place all time in Binghamton program history with Michelle Weeks (2001-04).

McDonough was 3-for-4 against Campbell while senior first baseman Emma Lawson collected a pair of hits.

In the nightcap, Auburn showed why it is receiving votes in the current NFCA National Poll. Five of the Tigers' 13 hits went for extra bases - including a pair of doubles, a triple and two home runs.

Destiny Rodriguez drove in five runs for Auburn while McKeala Walker and Kyla Stroud each had a pair of RBI.

Carey homered for the second time in as many games, drilling a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning over the left field fence.

SJ Guerin improved to 2-1 with the win while senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy lost her first decision of the year.

For the weekend, Dodig tied for the team lead with a .375 batting average. She homered twice and drove in three runs. Redshirt junior Akira Kopec also hit .375 (3-for-8), doubled twice, drew two walks and recorded an RBI.

McDonough batted .357 (5-for-14) during the War Eagle Classic while Allen was 4-for-12 (.333). Carey, meanwhile, went 4-for-13 (.308).

Binghamton is off next weekend and returns to action at the Coastal Carolina Tournament Feb. 27-March 1.
