Softball Drops Pair of Games at Coastal Carolina Invite.

Bearcats defeated 11-1 by FAU, 10-7 by St. Joseph’s

CONWAY, S.C. – Binghamton (1-10) lost two games during the opening day of the Coastal Carolina Softball Invitational on Saturday at St. John Stadium. The Bearcats lost 11-1 in five innings to Florida Atlantic (13-6) - a team receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25 poll - and 10-7 to St. Joseph's (6-6).

Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey, freshman designated player Lauren Payne as well as junior catcher Elisa Allen each drove in a pair of runs. Carey finished the day 4-for-6 (.667) while Payne was 3-for-7 (.429). In addition, Carey and Allen each belted a two-run home run.

It was Payne that opened up the scoring in the Bearcats' first game of the day against Florida Atlantic (FAU). She doubled home Carey in the top of the first inning, giving the Bearcats an early lead.

From there, however, the Owls came back with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and tacked on four more runs in the third inning. FAU then finished off the game on a three-run home run by Karson Davey in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Makenna Lee raised her record to 4-0 while senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy fell to 0-3.

Once again, the Bearcats took the early lead in the nightcap against the Hawks. The Bearcats plated four runs in the top of the second inning on Carey's two-run shot, an RBI single by Payne and a run-scoring double by junior outfielder Maddy Dodig.

St. Joseph's, however, scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings to deadlock the game at 4-4.

Graduate student Darien McDonough - who finished the day 2-for-6 (.333) - gave Binghamton the lead back on a RBI single in the top of the sixth inning. The Hawks, however, blew the game open with six runs in the bottom of the same inning to go up 10-5. Riley York delivered the big blow with a three-run double.

Allen trimmed the deficit to 10-7 with her two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. From there, however, Ava Farina held the Bearcats scoreless to even her record at 1-1.

The loss was tagged to freshman pitcher Taylor Cawley, who is now 0-2.

Freshman outfielder Megan Wolf went 2-for-3 against St. Joseph's.

Dodig ended the day 2-for-5 (.400).

Binghamton returns to action on Sunday at the Coastal Carolina Tournament with a 9 a.m. game against FAU and a 2 p.m. contest against the host Chanticleers.
