VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton women's lacrosse (0-2) was defeated by Siena (2-0) on Friday afternoon. Friday's game was the team's Morgan's Message game, a special promotion to help bring awareness to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community, create more mentally healthy environments for those student-athletes, and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics.
"Today was a tough battle and a very competitive game," head coach
Stephanie Allen stated. "The end result was far from what we want, but our team put forth good effort and intensity today."
Binghamton got out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, with
Leah Kaufer and
Emma Blloshmi getting on goals on the board for the Bearcats. Kaufer's goal was the first of her career.
The Saints tied it up with eight minutes left to play in the first quarter.
Brooke Bort and
Carla Curth found the back of the net to give the Bearcats a 4-2 lead after one quarter of play.
Siena started the second quarter with two goals to tie the game at 10:36. The two sides went back-and-forth in scoring until Siena's Elizabeth Wamp scored two goals in the last 90 seconds of the half to give the Saints a 7-6 lead at the half.
The third quarter was a high scoring period for both sides.
Jess Robinson scored her second goal of the game on a man advantage opportunity put the Bearcats only down by one with 10:53 on the clock.
Siena rattled off two quick goals to pull ahead 10-7. Curth was able to find her hat trick goal with 5:56 left to play in the third quarter. Four more goals were scored between the two sides before the third quarter came to an end with Siena leading 12-10.
After a nine-goal sequence in the third, the fourth quarter saw a defensive surge, as both teams couldn't find a goal until the 8:19 mark, when
Mia Forte scores an unassisted goal to make it a 12-11 game.
The Bearcats ended up taking a costly penalty, leading to Siena to score on the man-up advantage and ultimately seal Friday's high scoring game at 13-11.
"We need to clean up some areas, but our players don't lack determination," coach Allen said after the high scoring matchup.
Binghamton returns to action on Wednesday against St. Bonaventure for their Bundle Up for Bonnies game. The first 100 fans will receive free beanies.
