Women's lacrosse earns first victory of the season

Bearcats held St. Bonaventure scoreless in second half to win 9-7

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton women's lacrosse (1-2) shutout St. Bonaventure (1-2) in the second half to allow them to come back and secure their first victory of the season by a score of 9-7.

Emma Blloshmi tallied four goals in Wednesday's victory. Anthea Hayslip, Christina Lauro, Carla Curth, and Mia Forte each recorded a goal for the Bearcats. Emily Backlin earned her first career win between the pipes, making six saves in the victory.

"Really proud of this group for being resilient and battling for an entire 60 minutes," head coach Stephanie Allen said about her team's victory. "We've been in some close and competitive games already, so it was nice to see our team trust the process and come up with a W today."

The Bonnies got out to a strong lead with Brooke Piper registering four goals to get St. Bonaventure out to a 7-3 lead with 4:10 left remaining in the second quarter.

Blloshmi was able to find the back of the net with 27 seconds left to play in the first half, bringing the score to 7-4.

The second half was nothing but Binghamton, as the Bearcats defense didn't allow a single goal to be scored and held the Bonnies to just five shots in the 30 minutes of play.

Blloshmi scored her fourth goal of the game early into the third quarter, while Lauro and Curth found the back of the net towards the end of the quarter to tie the game at seven a side heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.

As the two sides fought to find the go-ahead goal, the goal would ultimately be an own goal from St. Bonaventure at the 8:44 mark, giving Binghamton its first lead of the game since the 12:53 mark in the first quarter.

The Bonnies looked to tie the game back up, but Backlin made a huge save, resulting in the Bearcats breaking out on the counterattack, where Forte scored her third goal of the season and extended Binghamton's lead to two.

St. Bonaventure was desperately trying to find any sort of answer after a strong first half, but the Bearcats defense continued to lock down any efforts the Bonnies brought forward, leading Binghamton to grab its first victory of the season at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday for their first road contest of the season against Colgate at 1 p.m.
