Baseball drops series finale at Dallas Baptist 6-3

Relievers Mitchell, Dally close out game with no earned runs in 5.0 innings

DALLAS, Texas - Dallas Baptist (3-0) erased an early 3-0 Binghamton lead and the host Patriots finished off a weekend sweep with a 6-3 decision Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark.

The Bearcats (0-3) jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning. But DBU countered with two runs in each of the second and third innings to take the lead and then tacked on two unearned runs in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Binghamton bullpen arms Jackson Mitchell (3.1 IP) and Jake Dally (1.2) were sharp in the late innings. Mitchell allowed just two hits with two strikeouts and no earned runs in his outing. Dally followed with 1.2 hitless innings with a strikeout.

Offensively, the Bearcats were limited to three hits - a run-scoring single by sophomore first baseman Steven Kraus in the first, an RBI double by sophomore catcher Tommy Popoff in the first and a single by senior second baseman Zack Kent in the eighth. Sophomore DH Andrew Heppner drove in the other run with a groundout in the first.

Binghamton chased DBU's ace and preseason All-American by sending eight men to the plate in the first. Sophomore center fielder Matt Bolton drew a walk and sophomore left fielder Grant Hunter followed with a hit-by-pitch. With one out, Kraus delivered an RBI single to right for a 1-0 lead. Heppner made it 2-0 with his ground ball and then with two outs, Popoff sent a 106-mph shot slicing toward the right field corner for an RBI double and a 3-0 lead.

The Bearcats made two outstanding defensive plays in the game. Sophomore third baseman Tim Hennig sprinted with his back to the infield and made a great over-the-shoulder, sliding catch in the fourth inning. Two innings later, Popoff then hung on for a foul fly at the netting despite crashing into the brick backstop.

Binghamton returns to the road next weekend for a three-game set at William & Mary.
