Baseball defeats William & Mary 9-8 for first win

Hennig grand slam in 7th inning rallies Bearcats past Tribe in series opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Redshirt sophomore third baseman Tim Hennig belted a grand slam in the seventh inning to lift Binghamton baseball (1-3) past host William & Mary (0-4) 9-8 Friday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

In a game that see-sawed back and forth with four lead changes, the Bearcats struck the final blow with Hennig's first career home run. Trailing 8-5 in the seventh, a trio of sophomores all reached. Catcher Tommy Popoff, DH Andrew Heppner and right fielder Ian Kaiser each singled to load the bases. Hennig then sent a 2-2 offering over the wall in right center for the deciding runs.

Junior closer Jackson Mitchell locked down the save with 3.0 hitless innings. Mitchell fanned five to give freshman reliever Mason Holloway his first collegiate victory. Holloway went two innings in relief of junior starter Hayden Tarsia, who struck out eight in 4.0 IP.

Sophomore center fielder Matt Bolton went 3-for-6 and Popoff went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Hennig wound up with two hits, three runs and the four RBI.

The Bearcats trailed 2-0 before scoring four runs in the third inning. Two came in on a bases-loaded single up the middle from Popoff. Binghamton led 4-2 before W&M countered with three in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead. Down 6-4, the Bearcats got one back in the top of the sixth when Hennig led off with a single and three batters later, scored on a Tribe infield error. But W&M added two runs in the bottom of the inning to build an 8-5 lead, setting the stage for Hennig's heroics.

The teams close out the series with a Saturday twinbill beginning at 1 p.m.
