BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC stretched a 13-point halftime lead with an early 16-9 second-half run and the first-place Retrievers (14-8, 7-2 America East) toppled Binghamton men's basketball (5-19, 1-8 AE) 79-62 Thursday night at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.
Junior guard
Jeremiah Quigley earned his fourth double-double of the season and wound up with game-highs of 20 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. It was his sixth 20+ point performance of the season and his 11 boards were a career high. He continues to lead the America East in assists and also is among the top-8 scorers.
Junior forward
Bryson Wilson and graduate guard
Jackson Benigni added 18 and 14 points, respectively.
Binghamton, already thin with six season-ending injuries, played without top frontcourt scorer and rebounder
Zyier Beverly and then lost swingman
Ryan Richardson to an injury eight minutes into the game. The Bearcats had no available scholarship players on the bench for the remainder of the game.
Binghamton played to within four points in the second half but the deficit was too much to overcome.
"It's a tough situation," head coach
Levell Sanders said of the unprecedented injuries. "Our guys played their hearts out … three guys were out there for 40 minutes and one for 39. All we can do is compete as much as possible. UMBC can make shots … and we couldn't play man the whole game so we did the best we could."
The Bearcats hit 4-of-6 to start and were within one, 21-20, with 7:24 left in the first half. But UMBC closed the half with an 18-6 run to take a 39-26 lead as Binghamton misfired on 8-of-9 to end the period. Wilson tallied 13 points and Quigley added eight in the half.
Binghamton continues its two-game, four-day road trip Saturday afternoon at NJIT.
