Softball Gains Split in Day One at Gamecock Invite

Bearcats beat Syracuse 5-1, edged by No. 19 Virginia Tech 4-1

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Redshirt junior second baseman Akira Kopec drove in three runs and senior pitcher Brianna Roberts tossed a complete-game victory, highlighting the Bearcats' first day at the season-opening Gamecock Invitational. The Bearcats (1-1) won 4-1 against the Orange (1-1) in their opener and then put up a solid performance before being defeated 4-1 by No. 19 Virginia Tech (1-0).

Kopec was 2-for-3 in the win over the Orange with a home run and three RBI. Roberts, meanwhile, had an impressive season debut, scattering one run on four hits and striking out eight batters in 7.0 innings of work.

Senior first baseman Emma Lawson hit a team-best .571 during the day (4-for-7) while sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey finished 3-for-7 (.429). Both Kopec and junior outfielder Maddy Dodig were 2-for-6 (.333) during the two games.

Dodig opened the scoring against Syracuse with an RBI double in the top of the second inning. Kopec then keyed a three-run top of the third inning with a two-run single, padding the Bearcats' lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Dodig got the Bearcats out of a bases-loaded jam when she started a double play. After catching a fly ball in right field, she made a perfect throw to double off one of the Orange's base runners.

Syracuse finally got on the board when Grace Weaver singled home a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kopec, however, answered with her solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.

While Roberts collected the victory, Julianna Verni was tagged with the loss in her first decision of the year.

In their second game of the day, the Bearcats were locked in a 1-1 tie against the Hokies through three innings. Binghamton's run came in the bottom of the first inning when graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough scored on a wild pitch.

Virginia Tech, however, pulled away on a solo home run by Emma Mazzarone in the top of the fourth inning as well as a two-run double by Zoe Yaeger one inning later.

Sophie Klieman pitched the first four innings to get the win while Brie Carrico tossed the final three innings to nail down the save.

Junior pitcher Delaney Glover and sophomore pitcher Savanna McHale threw well against the Hokies, holding the nationally-ranked squad to four runs through seven innings. Glover, however, took the loss in her first decision of the year.

The Bearcats drew seven walks and were hit by four pitches during the two games, finishing the day with a .365 on-base percentage. McDonough alone drew a pair of walks and was hit by two pitches to finish the day with a .635 on-base percentage. In addition, Glover forced in a run during the Syracuse game when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

For her career, Roberts now has 42 victories and moves into sole possession of fourth place all time in Binghamton program history. She was tied with Demi Laney (2011-14) with 41 wins heading into the season. Roberts' strikeout total is now 384 and she remains in fourth place all-time in school history.

Binghamton has rematches on Saturday against Syracuse and Virginia Tech - with the start times once again set for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. It will mark the Bearcats' second of three days at the South Carolina Gamecock Invitational.
