Softball drops pair of games at Gamecock Invite.

Bearcats edged 4-3 by Syracuse, lose 11-3 to No. 19 Virginia Tech

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Binghamton (1-3) continued its weekend at the Gamecock Invitational with a pair of contests on Saturday at Beckham Field. The Bearcats dropped a 4-3 walk-off decision to Syracuse (1-2) before falling 11-3 to No. 19 Virginia Tech (4-0) in six innings. Both the Orange and Hokies are Power-4 Conference programs that compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey, senior first baseman Emma Lawson as well as freshman designated player Lauren Payne each drove in a pair of runs during the day. Carey also went 3-for-6 (.500) at the plate while Payne was 2-for-6 (.333). In addition, graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough batted a team-best .667 (4-for-6).

Against the Orange, Payne doubled home junior outfielder Maddy Dodig in the top of the second inning to deadlock the game at 1-1. Lawson then doubled in a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, putting Binghamton ahead 3-2.

Syracuse was held in check until Jadyn Burney scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth inning, tying the score at 3-3. One inning later, Burney singled home the winning run with two outs in the frame.

Madison Knight evened her record at 1-1 while freshman pitcher Taylor Cawley lost her first career decision.

McDonough pounded out three of her hits against Syracuse.

In the nightcap, the Bearcats struck first with three runs in the top of the top of the third inning. Carey singled home the first two runs and scored three batters later on a RBI single by Payne.

Senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy held the Hokies scoreless until they came up with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nora Abromavage delivered the big blow of the frame with a two-run home run.

Abromavage later scored one of Virginia Tech's two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and then keyed a five-run outburst in the sixth inning with a grand slam.

Up 10-3 in that same bottom of the sixth inning, the Hokies finished off the game on a solo home run by Haley Luginbill.

Bree Carrico, who came on in relief in the fourth inning, won her first decision of the year. Kennedy, meanwhile, fell to 0-1.

Carey and Dodig each had a pair of hits against the Hokies. Dodig finished the day 2-for-5 (.400).

Binghamton concludes its stay at the Gamecock Invitational with a 12:30 p.m. game on Sunday against host South Carolina, who is currently ranked No. 19 in the nation.
