Softball Defeated 9-1 by No. 12 South Carolina

Bearcats conclude opening weekend with third game against a ranked team

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Binghamton (1-4) wrapped up its weekend at the Gamecock Invitational with a 9-1, six-inning loss to No. 12 South Carolina (2-2) on Sunday afternoon at Beckham Field. The game concluded a tournament stay for the Bearcats that featured three games against nationally-ranked opponents and all five contests against teams from Power-4 Conferences.

In all five games during the weekend, Binghamton was either tied or ahead of its opponents through three innings. On Sunday against the Gamecocks, the Bearcats tied the game at 1-1 on a RBI single by freshman designated player Lauren Payne in the top of the fourth inning. The score then remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

South Carolina finally blew the game open with seven runs in the aforementioned bottom of the fifth inning to go up 8-1. The Gamecocks then finished off the game on a home run by Arianna Rodi in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Senior starting pitcher Brianna Roberts pitched effectively over the first 4.0 innings. In the end, four of the eight runners she allowed were unearned. Her record is now 1-1.

Emma Freidel, who came on in relief in the fifth inning, improved to 1-0 with the win.

Payne finished the weekend with a team-best three RBI. Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey led the Bearcats in batting with a .438 batting average (7-for-16). She also drove in a pair of runs as did senior first baseman Emma Lawson (who went 6-for-15, .400).

Graduate student Darien McDonough, meanwhile, went 5-for-14 (.357).

Binghamton travels to the Auburn Tournament this coming Friday-Sunday.
