Baseball edged in series finale at High Point

Bearcats lose 4-3 despite strong showing from pitchers Bouchard, Dally

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point (7-5) snapped a 1-1 tie with three runs in the seventh and the host Panthers (7-5) held off Binghamton baseball (2-7) 4-3 in the rubber game of the weekend series Sunday afternoon at Williard Stadium.

Despite collecting just two hits on the afternoon, the Bearcats were even through six and then had the tying run in scoring position in each of the last two innings.

Down 4-1, Binghamton sent seven to the plate in the eighth and scored two runs. But a bases loaded double play and 2-out groundout left the tying run stranded on second.

In the ninth, the Bearcats had another shot after the leadoff hitter reached on an outfield error. After a sacrifice bunt moved the tying run to second, a fly out and strikeout ended the game.

Sophomore left fielder Grant Hunter closed his strong series with a solo home run in the sixth. It was Hunter's third home run of the series after he belted two solo shots on Saturday. That first pitch long ball evened the game at 1-1.

Sophomore starter Brady Bouchard worked 5.0 innings and kept High Point in check on seven hits and one run. Bouchard struck out three. Junior Jake Dally was exceptional in his 1.2 innings. Dally struck out four of the five hitters he faced to keep the Bearcats within striking distance.

Sophomore first baseman Steven Kraus had Binghamton's other hit. Sophomore center fielder Matt Bolton was denied a home run in the third inning when the HPU right fielder hurtled over the wall to snare the deep shot.

Weather permitting, the Bearcats are scheduled to host St. Bonaventure in their home opener at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
