Baseball beats Richmond 5-2 with three-run eighth

Bolton, Kent deliver 2 RBI each as Bearcats take opening game of weekend series in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. - Binghamton baseball (3-7) snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the seventh inning to defeat host Richmond (8-6) 5-2 Friday afternoon at Pitt Field. 

The Bearcats twice rallied from a one-run deficit and then put the game away with three runs on three hits in the seventh - all with two out. Senior shortstop Mike Stellrecht singled and freshman pinch-hitter Caden Albright and sophomore center fielder Matt Bolton drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Sophomore left fielder Grant Hunter gave Binghamton a 3-2 lead with an RBI single through the left side. Senior second baseman Zack Kent followed with a two-run single through the left side. 

Junior closer Jackson Mitchell continued his strong spring with 3.0 scoreless frames to earn the save. Mitchell allowed just one hit and struck ouf three, including one in the ninth with one on base. He hasn't allowed an earned run in four appearances (11.1 IP).

Bolton went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI. He raised his season average to a team-high .324 (.468 on-base).

Junior starter Conner Griffin went 5.0 innings and scattered three hits and two runs. He struck out five, giving him 17 strikeouts in 14.1 innings this spring. 

Down 1-0, Binghamton tied the game on a Bolton 2-out RBI in the third. Sophomore right fielder Ian Kaiser drew a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice by Stellrecht. Bolton delivered a base hit to center, scoring Kaiser. After Richmond reclaimed the lead with a run in the fourth, the Bearcats countered with a tying run in the sixth - again from Bolton. With one out, he took a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left center for his first long ball of the spring. 

The teams continue their three-game set with a single game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
