Softball splits DH at Princeton

Bearcats win opener 6-1 but drop nightcap 7-0

PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore pitcher Savanna McHale tossed a complete-game victory and did not allow an earned run, highlighting Binghamton's doubleheader split in non-conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Cynthia Lynn Paul '94 Field. The Bearcats (5-15) won the first game 6-1 but the host Tigers (8-8) - who are the defending Ivy League regular-season champions - got even with a 7-0 triumph in the second game.

McHale went the full 7.0 innings of the opener, scattering just five hits and allowing only an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Her record for the year is now 2-1.

Offensively, junior outfielder Maddy Dodig was 3-for-4 in the first game and drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey was 2-for-4 with an RBI while freshman outfielder Megan Wolf and senior first baseman Emma Lawson knocked in one run each.

Dodig keyed a three-run top of the first inning when she singled home Carey - who led off the game with a double. She then scored the final run of the frame on a RBI single by Wolf.

Carey and Dodig delivered again in the top of the second inning as the Bearcats opened up a 5-0 lead. Carey singled home the first run of the frame and was doubled home by Dodig two batters later.

Lawson, meanwhile, drove in the Bearcats' final run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning.

The Tigers' unearned run came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Binghamton then regrouped to get the final out.

Brielle Wright dropped to 0-5 with the loss in the first game.

The tables were turned, however, in the second game as Cassidy Shaw fired a four-hit shutout. In the process, the current Ivy League Pitcher of the Week improved to 3-1 for the season.

Offensively, Princeton got four RBI from Julia DuMais and another two from Sonia Zhang in the nightcap.

Taking the loss was freshman pitcher Taylor Cawley, whose record fell to 1-4.

Freshman designated player Lauren Payne went 2-for-3 in the second game.

Junior shortstop Rebecca Minnichbach finished the day 2-for-6 (.333) and scored a run.

Binghamton and Princeton wrap up their weekend series on Sunday with a 11:30 a.m. finale.
