VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women's basketball team is set to participate in the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), as announced by the company Sunday evening. The Bearcats are set to face off against Mercyhurst in the opening round on Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m.
This will be the first time the Bearcats will participate in a postseason tournament since 2018, when the team acted in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI).
The WNIT is a longstanding NCAA Division I women's postseason basketball tournament that has been in operation since 1998. The field will consist of a 48-team bracket which includes teams that receive automatic berths and at-large selections. All teams at the Division I level will be considered for at-large berths, including those who are independent and/or are in the transition process of reaching full NCAA Division I status.
"Till this point we have made great strides to the women's basketball program," head coach
Mary Grimes stated. "Adding a postseason opportunity is an honor."
