NEWARK, Del. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team (2-7, 1-1 America East) fell to Delaware (2-7, 0-2 Atlantic 10) Saturday at Delaware Stadium in the Bearcats' final non-conference game of the season.
Connor Winters made 12 saves in goal for Binghamton, while
Andrew Girolamo,
Liam Byrne,
Gavin Jacobsen and
Tyler Martini each scored one goal for Binghamton. Delaware was led by Brendan Powers, who recorded three goals for a hat trick.
The Fightin' Blue Hens shut out the Bearcats in the first quarter while jumping out to a 5-0 lead, with their first three goals coming in the first three minutes of the game. Binghamton got on the board early in the second quarter when
Matthew Rincon took the ball from Delaware's Jason Kolar and sprinted down the field with it. Rincon then set up Byrne, who fired in his third goal of the season at 13:20. Binghamton's defense limited Delaware to just one goal in the second, which came from Owings at 10:09. Towards the end of the half, the Bearcats grabbed momentum by scoring two goals in the final 1:29. First, Martini broke through two defenders near the net to score his third goal in as many games. Then, with time winding down,
Troeger Lombardini fed Girolamo the ball, who then scored his team-leading 22nd goal of the season with three seconds left. Binghamton went into halftime trailing 6-3.
The momentum for the Bearcats would not last long, however, as Delaware once again shut out Binghamton, this time in the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Fightin' Blue Hens picked up three goals during the frame to grow their lead to 9-3. Binghamton would pick up a man-up goal from Jacobsen with 10:51 left in the fourth quarter, but despite keeping the Fightin' Blue Hens off the scoreboard in the final 15 minutes of the game, the Bearcats would be unable to complete their comeback.
Binghamton returns to America East Conference play with an in-state game at UAlbany at 2 p.m., on Saturday, April 4.
