Baseball splits doubleheader with Fairfield

Bearcats take opener 12-6, lose nightcap 5-1; Hennig belts grand slam in Game 1

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (10-12) split a non-conference doubleheader with visiting Fairfield (11-11) Sunday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Complex. Binghamton won the opener 12-6 before dropping the nightcap 5-1.

In Game 1, the Bearcats continued their offensive trend with another double-digit showing. Binghamton shook off an early 3-1 deficit with six runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth. The 12-hit attack allowed Binghamton to reach double figures for the fourth straight game.

Sophomore third baseman Tim Hennig provided the big blow with a grand slam in the third inning. Hennig took a 1-1 pitch and mashed it over the wall in right field to snap a 3-3 tie and put the Bearcats ahead 7-3. It was Hennig's third home run of the season and second grand slam. In the fourth inning, Hennig added an RBI single to finish off a 5-RBI showing.

Sophomore second baseman Sean Sweeney went 3-for-4 with an RBI and sophomore left fielder Grant Hunter added two doubles and two RBI. Sweeney is hitting .583 in 11 games this season.

In Game 2, the Bearcats' offense finally slowed and the Stags snapped a 1-1 tie with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Fairfield then added two insurance runs in the seventh and four Stags pitchers limited Binghamton to just three hits with 13 strikeouts.

The Bearcats tied the game with a run in the third and had a golden opportunity to pull ahead in the fourth with runners on second and third and just one out. But a strikeout and fly out left two stranded in scoring position. Binghamton brought the tying run to the plate in the fifth after a leadoff walk but a strikeout and interference call on a would-be stolen base wiped out the baserunner and threat. The strike zone widened in the closing innings as the teams combined for 21 punchouts.

Binghamton begins four straight road games with a Tuesday afternoon contest at St. Bonaventure.
