Softball Sweeps Maine 12-11, 11-3

Bearcats pound out 28 hits in first games at BSC this season

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior catcher Elisa Allen and junior outfielder Maddy Dodig each drove in five runs while graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough scored five times, powering Binghamton (7-16, 5-0 AE) to a 12-11, 11-3 sweep over Maine (8-23, 0-5 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The victories marked the first contests held at the Bearcats Sports Complex this season.

Allen went a perfect 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI. She also drew four walks. For the season, Allen leads the America East with seven home runs and is second with 20 RBI. In addition, she now has 37 home runs for her career - which continues to rank second all time in program history and now ranks ninth in America East history.

Dodig went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles. She also scored three times and drew a pair of walks. In the first game against the Black Bears, Dodig finished with a career-high four RBI. For the season, she is now batting a career-best .409.

As a team, the Bearcats hit .491 against the Black Bears. Binghamton finished with 28 hits - including eight of them for extra bases. In addition, the Bearcats drew 11 walks and stole five bases during the day.

"It was great to be back home and get the two wins today," head coach Jess Bump said. "We are a team that scores a lot of runs and when we get momentum, we are hard to stop. We were really disciplined at the plate both in hitting the ball and drawing walks."

In the opener, Maine reeled off seven runs in the top of the second inning to take a 7-2 lead. Neve Adams smacked a three-run home run during that frame and Kayelin Larkin followed with a grand slam.

The Bearcats, however, got back in the game with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to pull to within 7-6. Dodig doubled home the first run and Allen capped the scoring with a two-run home run.

McDonough tied the score at 8-8 with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning and scored two batters later on a double by senior first baseman Emma Lawson.

Binghamton then got three crucial insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 12-8. Dodig doubled home the first two runs and Allen singled in the other run.

The Black Bears pulled to within 12-11 in the top of the seventh inning but sophomore pitcher Savanna McHale was able to retire the final two batters of the game. Her record is now 3-1 while Ava Zettlemoyer fell to 2-6.

Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey - who finished the day 5-for-7 (.714) - posted a career-high four hits in the opener.

Binghamton finished the first game with a season-high 16 hits.

In the nightcap, the Bearcats were down 1-0 when Allen drilled her second two-run home run of the day in the bottom of the second inning. That keyed a three-run frame, which concluded with an RBI double by senior shortstop Rebecca Minnichbach.

Kiera Inman of Maine deadlocked the score at 3-3 on a two-run double in the top of the third inning. Binghamton, however, responded with three more runs in the bottom of the same inning. Freshman outfielder Megan Wolf roped a two-run double during that span.

In the fourth inning, the Bearcats padded the lead to 8-3 on an RBI double by Dodig and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Wolf. Binghamton was then able to finish the game one inning later on a RBI double by McDonough and a two-run walkoff single by Lawson.

Senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy went the distance and  raised her record to 1-4 with the victory. The loss was tagged to Hannah Hipwell whose record is now 2-4.

Wolf's three RBI in the second game marked her career high.

Freshman designated player Lauren Payne finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 (.571) and scored a pair of runs.

Binghamton hosts Colgate in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
