Softball Drops 7-5, 11-3 DH to Lehigh

Bearcats continue five-game homestand at BASGAI Complex

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Visiting Lehigh (10-8) pounded out 26 hits - including nine for extra bases - on its way to a 7-5, 11-3 sweep over Binghamton (3-14) in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at the Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park. The twinbill marked the continuation of the Bearcats' five-game homestand at the off-campus facility.

Binghamton had another solid day at the plate, finishing the two games on Saturday with a .347 team batting average. The Bearcats got home runs from junior catcher Elisa Allen, sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey as well as freshman designated player Reese Izenstark. Carey went 3-for-6 (.500) the day, drove in a pair of runs and is now batting a team-best .474 for the season.

The Mountain Hawks, however, hit .406 as a team during the pair of games. They got off to strong starts in both games, scoring the first three runs of the opener before taking an 8-0 lead in the finale.

In the first game, Peyton Sward broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out, two run single. She finished the opener 3-for-5 and drove in a game-high three runs.

Binghamton had two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lehigh, however, was able to turn a double play to end the game.

Maddy Clark raised her record to 3-1 with the win while the loss was tagged to senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy. Her record is now 0-4.

Carey's home run led off the bottom of the first inning while Izenstark's homer led off the bottom of the second inning.

Junior outfielder Maddy Dodig went 2-for-4 in the first game while freshman first baseman Lauren Payne was 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, Lehigh was up 8-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning and in position to finish off the game. The Bearcats, however, got a sacrifice hit from redshirt junior second baseman Akira Kopec and a sacrifice fly from Carey to extend play into the sixth inning.

The Mountain Hawks responded with three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to go up 11-2. Sydney Parlett led off the frame with a home run and Crysta Duenas later hit a two-run shot.

Allen belted her solo home run with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning but the Bearcats left a pair of runners on base when the game ended via the eight-run rule.

Madison Finnerty went the distance to raise her record to 4-2 this season. Freshman Taylor Cawley, meanwhile, fell to 1-3.

Allen's home run was the 35th of her career and moves her into sole possession of second place all time in Binghamton program history. She entered the day tied with Taylor Chaffee (2013-16) and Kate Richard (2015-18) - both of whom hit 34 homers during their Bearcat careers.

Payne, who hit a team-best .667 during the day (4-for-6), went 2-for-3 in the nightcap.

Junior outfielder Maddy Dodig was .429 (3-for-7) on the day while Kopec was 1-for-3 (.333) and drew a pair of walks. Allen also went 1-for-3 (.333) with two walks while Izenstark was 2-for-6 (.333).

Binghamton hosts Colgate at 11 a.m. on Sunday in its final weekend game at the Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park.
