Baseball holds off Richmond 4-3 to take series

Tarsia works 5.0 innings for win; Mitchell shuts door in ninth for fourth save

RICHMOND, Va. - Junior starter Hayden Tarsia allowed just one run in five innings and junior reliever Jackson Mitchell continued his dominance with his fourth save as Binghamton baseball (4-8) defeated Richmond (9-7) 4-3 in the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field.

Tarsia scattered three hits and struck out three and Mitchell fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth. In five appearances this spring, Mitchell hasn't allowed an earned run and has 17 strikeouts in 12.1 IP.

Sophomore first baseman Steven Kraus went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Junior catcher Zach Anderson went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Richmond led 1-0 with a run in the second, though Tarsia limited the damage by stranding two. The Bearcats took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth. Senior second  baseman Zack Kent was hit by pitch to open the frame. Sophomore center fielder Matt Bolton singled to left and Kraus followed with an RBI single inside the third base bag to tie the game. With one out, sophomore left fielder Grant Hunter plated the go-ahead run with a groundout and Anderson delivered an RBI double to left center to make it 3-1.

The Spiders cut it to 3-2 with a run in the seventh. But junior reliever Jake Dally stranded two more Richmond runners with an infield pop-up and a comebacker to end the threat.

Kraus gave the Bearcats an important insurance run with a solo blast in the eighth. With two out and a 3-2 count, he sent a deep shot into the parking lot beyond the right field wall for his third home run of the spring. Richmond countered with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning before Mitchell ended the drama and the game.

After 12 straight road games to start 2026, Binghamton hosts St. Bonaventure Tuesday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex.
