Baseball edges UMBC 4-3

Bearcats record one-run victory for the second straight day

VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore second baseman Sean Sweeney went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs while senior outfielder Zack Kent went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, lifting Binghamton (16-13, 8-3 AE) to a 4-3 victory over UMBC (16-13, 5-3 AE) in an America East baseball game on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats are assured of taking the conference series heading into tomorrow's 1 p.m. finale.

The victory marks Binghamton's second straight one-run triumph in the three-game conference series between the top two teams in the America East. Unlike Friday, where the Bearcats rallied for the extra-inning win, they built an early lead and were able to hang on down the stretch.

Kent scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by senior shortstop Mike Stellrecht in the bottom of the second inning. Sweeney made it 2-0 in the third inning on an RBI ground out by sophomore first baseman Steven Kraus.

Binghamton then plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go up 4-0. Sweeney scored the first run on a fielding error and Kent singled home the second run.

UMBC crept back into the game when Jesiah Carpenter stole home on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning. One inning later, Danny Wyatt cut Binghamton's lead to 4-3 when he clubbed a two-run home run over the right-center field fence.

In the top of the ninth inning, UMBC loaded the bases with just one out. Sophomore pitcher Vincent Luther however, was able to get the final two outs to nail down his first save of the year.

Freshman pitcher Mason Holloway raised his record to 2-2 while the loss was tagged to Zach Robinson. His record is now  5-1.

With his three hits on Saturday, Sweeney extended his hitting streak to 13 games. It marks the longest streak by a Binghamton player so far this season.

Stellrecht finished the game 2-for-3.
