Softball gains DH split at Bryant

Bearcats lose opener 8-0 before recording 4-2 win

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior outfielder Maddy Dodig homered and drove in a pair of runs while senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy recorded her third straight conference victory, highlighting Binghamton's doubleheader split against Bryant in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Conaty Park. In a matchup between the top two teams in the conference, the Bearcats (10-19, 11-2 AE) lost 8-0 in five innings in the first game to the Bulldogs (14-18, 11-3 AE) before grinding out a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

Dodig finished the day a team-best .667 at the plate. She went 2-for-3 but also drew a pair of walks and had a sacrifice fly.

Kennedy, meanwhile, went the full seven innings in the second game and despite giving up nine hits, allowed only one earned run. She also struck out four batters. Against America East opponents this season, Kennedy is now 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA.

Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey went 3-for-7 (.429) with an RBI double on Saturday. Freshman designated player Lauren Payne, meanwhile, finished the day 2-for-5 (.400).

Dodig did all of her damage in the second game. She broke open a scoreless tie with a leadoff home run in the top of the third inning. Dodig then capped the Bearcats' scoring with her sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning.

The other two Binghamton runs came courtesy Carey's RBI double in the top of the third inning as well as bases-loaded walk drawn by freshman pinch hitter Reese Izenstark in the top of the sixth inning.

Kennedy's record is now 3-4 while Brooke Tracey took the loss and is now 2-6.

Payne was 2-for-3 in the second game.

In the opener, it was a six-run bottom of the second inning by the Bulldogs that proved decisive. The big blows of the frame were a two-run triple by Laniya Lewis as well as a two-run double by Bryce Clendenin. Later in the same inning, Clendenin stole home on a wild pitch.

With Bryant up 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Williams doubled in the walk-off run.

Maddy Watcher fired a three-hit shutout to improve to 8-4 on the season. The loss was tagged to sophomore Savanna McHale, whose record dropped to 4-2.

Carey had two of the Bearcats' three hits in the opener.

Binghamton and Bryant conclude their weekend series with a noon game on Sunday.
