Softball loses 10-8 slugfest at Bryant

Bulldogs take over first place in AE

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Gabriella Gesualdo clubbed the decisive three-run home run, lifting Bryant (15-18, 12-3 AE) to a 10-8 win over Binghamton (10-20, 11-3 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at Conaty Field. With the victory, the Bulldogs take two out of three games during the weekend series and move into first place in the conference.

In a game that featured two ties and a pair of lead changes, Gesualdo broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with her three-run shot over the left field fence. From there, the Bulldogs held the Bearcats to a single run over the final two innings.

The defeat overshadowed a record-tying three doubles by freshman designated player Lauren Payne. She finished the game 3-for-4 and also drove in a career-best four runs.

Sophomore Rachel Carey was 2-for-4 and scored three times - Graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough also finished with three runs.

Binghamton jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the middle of the third inning. Payne doubled home a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and came through with an RBI double two innings later. McDonough added an RBI single in the third inning.

Bryant, however, got all of those runs back in the bottom of the third inning. Gesualdo, who also had four RBI during the game, had an RBI groundout during that frame. The big blow of the inning was a game-tying, two-run single by Carley Genzer.

Carey belted a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning, reclaiming the lead for Binghamton. Three batters later, Payne doubled home McDonough to stretch the lead to 7-5.

The Bulldogs got those runs right back in the bottom of the fourth inning, setting the stage for Gesualdo's decisive home run one inning later.

Lexi Powell improved to 3-4 with the win while junior pitcher Delaney Glover fell to 1-5 with the defeat.

Payne finished the weekend series with a team-best .556 batting average (5-for-9). Carey, meanwhile, went 5-for-11 (.455).

Binghamton hosts St. Bonaventure in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
