VESTAL, N.Y. - First-place Binghamton baseball (21-13, 12-3 America East) extended its longest win streak in 16 years with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Bryant (19-18, 7-8 AE) Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. Binghamton won 13-9 and 8-7 to sweep the weekend series and run its win streak to 11 games - longest since 2010. The Bearcats have now won 14 of their last 16 games.
In Game 1, Binghamton rallied from a 6-1 deficit and used a seven-run fifth inning to turn the game around. Down 7-5, the Bearcats batted around and scored seven runs on just three hits to take the lead for good.
Junior catcher
Zach Anderson tied the game with a 2-run single and five batters later, sophomore second baseman
Sean Sweeney blew the game open with a grand slam. Sweeney, the leading hitter in the America East with a .425 average, took a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left center for a 12-7 cushion. Bryant got two runs back before sophomore catcher
Tommy Popoff finished the scoring with a solo shot in the sixth.Â
The Bearcats belted a season-high five home runs. In addition to Sweeney and Popoff, sophomore outfielders
Matt Bolton (1st) and
Braylen Gonzalez (4th) hit solo shots and senior shortstop
Mike Stellrecht ripped a 3-run shot in the second inning. Popoff, Bolton and Gonzalez each collected two hits and sophomore first baseman
Steven Kraus extended his consecutive-games-reaching-base streak to 32 games.Â
In Game 2, the Bearcats fell behind 5-0 and were limited to two hits through six innings before erupting for eight decisive runs in the seventh inning. Binghamton cashed in on five hits and four walks. Popoff's 2-run double gave the Bearcats a 6-5 lead and senior left fielder
Zack Kent followed with a 2-run home run for an 8-5 lead.
Bryant hit a pair of home runs to make it 8-7 but sophomore reliever
Ben Griffith struck out the side in the eighth and then stranded the tying run on second by inducing a fly ball from the Bulldogs' cleanup hitter to end the game.Â
Binghamton collected seven hits - one each by seven different players.Â
The Bearcats now begin a stretch of five straight non-conference games with a Tuesday night home matchup with Cornell.   Â
