Softball Splits DH at Maine

Bearcats win opener 8-6, drop nightcap 4-3

ORONO, Maine – Junior catcher Elisa Allen homered twice and drove in five runs while sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey recorded her 100th career hit, highlighting Binghamton's split in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Labat Softball Complex. The Bearcats (13-21, 12-4 AE) won the first game 8-6 but the Black Bears (11-28, 5-8 AE) got even with a 4-3 walk-off win in the second game.

Allen, who hit both of her home runs in the opener, now has a conference-best 13 home runs and 37 RBI so far this season. With 43 career home runs, she is now one home run away from tying the program record set by Jessica Phillips (2010-13) and three away from tying the America East record.

Carey, meanwhile, becomes the 28th player in Binghamton program history to reach the 100-hit milestone as well as just the second to do so during her sophomore season. Jessica Rutherford (2015-18) is the only other Bearcat underclassman to reach the century mark.

Freshman Reese Izenstark hit a team-best .600 (3-for-5) during the day with a home run and two RBI. In her past three starts, she has homered twice.

Graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough went 4-for-7 (.571) with a home run and two RBI. She posted two hits in each game.

In the first game, the Bearcats had to dig themselves out of a 4-0 hole as Keira Inman belted a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning. Allen, however, trimmed the deficit to 4-3 with a three-run shot in the top of the third inning.

With the score deadlocked at 4-4, Allen and Izenstark both clubbed two-run home runs in the top of the fifth inning. Maine then responded with a two-run homer by Kaelyn Larkin in the bottom of the same inning.

The Bearcats got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth inning and allowed only one base runner in the seventh inning.

Sophomore pitcher Savanna McHale improved to 6-2 with the victory while senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy nailed down her first save of the season. The loss was tagged to Ava Zettlemoyer, whose record dropped to 3-7.

The Bearcats finished the first game with 14 hits.

Carey went 3-for-4 in the opener. Her second hit, which was a single to left field in the top of the third inning, represented her milestone hit.

In the nightcap, the Bearcats took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. McDonough drilled a two-run home run and Lawson roped an RBI double during that frame. Those were, however, the last runs the Bearcats would score.

Maine meanwhile, cut the deficit to 3-1 on a solo home run by Madison Hang in the bottom of the second inning. It then deadlocked the score at 3-3 with a pair of bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Black Bears used a dropped third strike and an infield error to plate the winning run.

Alysen Reith raised her record to 5-12 with the victory while junior Delaney Glover took the loss, dropping her record to 2-6.

Lawson finished the day 3-for-6 (.500) while Carey and junior outfielder Maddy Dodig were both 3-for-8 (.375).

Binghamton and Maine conclude their series with a 9 a.m. game on Sunday morning.
