Softball drops series finale at Maine 11-7

Allen ties program record with her 44th career home run

ORONO. Maine - Madison Hand drove in five runs, powering Maine (13-28, 6-8 AE) to an 11-7 win over Binghamton (13-22, 12-5 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at the Labat Softball Complex. With the victory - which was called official after five innings due to the weather - the Black Bears take the weekend series two games to one.

Hand keyed a six-run bottom of the second inning with a three-run triple and capped a three-run bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run double.

Junior catcher Elisa Allen and sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey each drove in a pair of runs for the Bearcats. The two of them combined for four of the Bearcats' eight hits.

Allen's solo home run in the top of the fourth inning was the 44th of her career. In the process, she tied the Binghamton program record held by Jessica Phillips (2010-13).

Prior to Maine's six-run, second-inning outburst, the Bearcats had taken a 3-0 lead. Allen singled home the first run in the top of the first inning. Carey belted an RBI double one inning later and senior shortstop Rebecca Minnichbach singled home the Bearcats other run in the second inning.

Up 6-4 in the bottom of the third inning, Maine used a two-run double by Neve Adams to go up 8-4.

Over the next two innings, the Bearcats rallied to within 8-7. In addition to Allen's home run - which cut the deficit to 8-5 -  Carey had an RBI single one inning later. Junior outfielder Maddy Dodig tripled home the other run - also during the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, however, the Black Bears answered with three more runs. Morgan Pool clubbed a solo home run and Hand capped the scoring with her two-run double.

The game was eventually called in the top of the sixth inning but become official when the fifth inning concluded.

Binghamton heads to Cornell on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
