BURLINGTON, Vt. – A season-high six goals in the fourth quarter was not enough for the Binghamton men's lacrosse team (2-11, 1-5 America East) to complete its comeback, as the Bearcats fell to Vermont (6-6, 3-2 America East) 14-8 Saturday in the season finale at Virtue Field.
Liam Byrne posted a career-high three points on one goal and two assists, while both
Will Feldmann and
Tyler Martini added two tallies. Playing in the final game of his decorated collegiate career,
Connor Winters stopped nine shots, collected two ground balls and caused one turnover while in goal for the Bearcats.
Max Frattaroli led Vermont with four goals. Cullen Decker posted three goals for the Catamounts, and Sean McCeney, Zack Toll and Tristan Whitaker each put up two tallies. Ryan Daly got the win in net for Vermont, making six saves in the process.
The Bearcats were shut out in the first quarter, while the Catamounts got two goals apiece from Decker and Toll, as well as one from Whitaker, to take a 5-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. Girolamo got Binghamton on the board with an underhand goal at 10:46 in the second, assisted by Byrne, but Vermont responded with two tallies from Frattaroli and one from Whitaker to go into halftime up 8-1.
Feldmann's first goal came at 12:06 in the third quarter, the Bearcats only tally during the frame. Vermont added another three goals during that stretch to extend its lead to 11-2 heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter of its season, Binghamton made a furious rally. After McCeney scored for Vermont 36 seconds into the final frame, Byrne got a goal at the 12:46 mark.
Flynn Wilson then won the ensuing faceoff and, after collecting the ground ball, made a run at the net. He then passed the ball off to Byrne, who then found
Ryan Meyers on the other side of the field. Meyers ultimately scored Binghamton's second goal in seven seconds to make it 12-4 Vermont. But the Bearcats' run was not finished.
Just over two minutes later at 10:29, Feldmann picked up his second goal of the day to bring the score to 12-5. After Ethan Pearson posted a goal for Vermont at 9:26,
Nolan Sharkey countered with his career-high fourth goal of the season just 12 seconds later to make it 13-6 UVM. Martini would then score two straight goals to bring Binghamton within five at 13-8, but Decker ended the rally with a goal at 4:13 to seal the game for the Catamounts.
Binghamton closes out its season with an overall record of 2-11 and a 1-5 mark in America East Conference play.
