Senior men’s swimmer is Binghamton’s eighth D1 athlete to earn the award

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior men's swimmer Liam Preston has capped his career with the nation's highest collegiate academic honor.

On Thursday afternoon, he was named a third-team Men's Swimming & Diving Division I Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). He is just the eighth Binghamton student-athlete during the university's 26-year NCAA Division I era to earn the distinction.

Widely considered as the most prestigious Academic All-America program, the CSC (formerly known as COSIDA) established it in 1952. The CSC Academic All-America process begins at the district level each year. CSC divides the NCAA institutions into nine geographic districts, with Binghamton being located in District 1. The qualifications for All-District honors include sophomore academic status, competing in 75 percent of a team's meet and/or a top-eight finish at the conference championships as well as at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

From there, the CSC Academic All-America advances the top All-District selections to the national ballot. The entire CSC membership then votes on the national ballot, which determines the list of Academic All-Americans.

Preston has been named to the CSC Academic All-District team three straight seasons (2024-26) and has advanced to the national ballot the past two years. Of the 26 men's swimming & diving student-athletes that earned Academic All-America honors this year, Preston was one of only four honorees from a mid-major school.

Preston is a four-time America East All-Conference selection and has been named to the conference's All-Academic Team three times (2024-26). Earlier this month, he was named the America East Men's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Twice during Preston's career, the Binghamton men's swimming & diving team won the America East title (2024 & 2025). At the conclusion of this year's America East Championships, he was the conference's David Alexander Coaches' Award Winner for scoring the most career points by a graduating senior.

In 2025, Preston was a team captain on the Bearcats' championship squad. At the conclusion of that conference meet, he was presented with the America East Elite 18 Award - which factored in both his academic and athletic accomplishments.

Preston is preceded by Charles Darkwah (men's soccer, 2004), Rory Quiller (men's track & field, 2007), Brendon Hitchcock (baseball, 2007), Sven Vloedgraven (men's tennis, 2011), Emily Mackay (women's track & cross country, 2021 and 2022), Dan Schaffer (men's track & cross country, 2022) and Tsvetelina Ilieva (volleyball, 2024) as the other Binghamton Division I student-athletes to earn Academic All-America honors.
