Softball Beats Maine 12-5 in AE Tournament Opener

Bearcats’ winner’s bracket game set for Friday at noon

ORONO, Maine – Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey homered and drove in four runs while freshman outfielder Megan Wolf and junior outfielder Maddy Dodig each finished with two RBI, powering second-seeded Binghamton (17-24)  to a 12-5 win over fifth-seeded and host Maine (12-35) in the opening round of the America East Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the Labat Softball Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats move on to the winner's bracket and will face either UMass Lowell or Bryant on Friday at noon.

The 12 runs scored by the Bearcats represents their most in an America East Tournament game. Binghamton also pounded out 13 hits, drew three walks and had three batters hit by pitches.

It was a nine-run bottom of the fourth inning that proved decisive in Binghamton's victory. The Bearcats entered the frame trailing 3-0 but sent 13 batters to the plate - the first 10 of which reached base safely.

Wolf got the scoring started with a two-run single and later scored the go-ahead run on a bunt single by senior shortstop Rebecca Minnichbach. Carey made it 6-3 Binghamton with a two-run single and graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough and senior first baseman Emma Lawson followed with back-to-back RBI singles. Dodig then capped the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly.

The Black Bears pulled to within 9-5 on a two-run single by Kiera Inman in the top of the fifth inning. Carey, however, answered with her two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Four batters later, Dodig singled home the final run of the day.

Junior pitcher Delaney Glover, who came on in relief after Inman's single, held Maine scoreless over the final three innings. In the process, she nailed down her first save of the year.

"We talked before the fourth inning that it was our second time through the line up and we just needed to control the zone a little bit," head coach Jess Bump said. "Our players really adjusted and did a great job."

Senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy, who started the game, improved to 6-7 with the victory. Ava Zettlemoyer, meanwhile, fell to 3-9 with the loss.

Carey now has 67 hits and continues to close in on Jessica Rutherford's 2018 program record of 71 hits. She is now batting .479 for the season with 11 home runs and 39 RBI.

McDonough, Lawson, Dodig and freshman designated player Lauren Payne all collected a pair of hits in the victory. Junior catcher Elisa Allen was 1-for-2 but also reached base twice after getting hit by a pitch.

Lawson now has an 11-game hitting streak, which ties her career high that she set last season.

In her last two appearances, Glover has pitched 10.0 innings with a 0.70 ERA. She is 1-0 with a save during that stretch.
