Softball Advances to AE Finals

Bearcats need to defeat UMass Lowell twice to repeat as champs

ORONO, Maine – For the second year in a row, Binghamton is heading to the America East softball finals. On Friday afternoon at the Lebet Softball Complex, the Bearcats were defeated by UMass Lowell 4-3 in the winners bracket but bounced back to defeat Bryant 10-1 in an elimination game.

Binghamton faces the River Hawks again on Saturday in the championship round, which starts at noon. The Bearcats must win two games to claim their second consecutive conference title.

Sophomore third baseman Rachel Carey continued her stellar week with two home runs and four RBI on Friday. She drove in all three Binghamton runs against the River Hawks and led off the game against Bryant with a home run.

Carey now has three home runs and eight RBI so far during the America East Tournament. She has already tied the tournament record for home runs.

In addition, Carey now has 70 hits this year. She is one hit away from tying Binghamton's single-season record, which was set by Jessica Rutherford back in 2016.

Carey hit .500 for the day (3-for-6) as did redshirt junior second baseman Akira Kopec. Freshman Lauren Payne was 2-for-5 (.400) with a pair of RBI while junior outfielder Maddy Dodig was 2-for-6 (.333) and drove in three runs.

"We had a tough first game but it was great to see Rachel set the tone for us in the second game," head coach Jess Bump. "We had to earn everything we got today and I'm just really happy with how the game ended and we're excited about tomorrow."

It was a four-run top of the fifth inning that proved decisive for the River Hawks in the first game. Down 1-0, UMass Lowell got a two-run single by Elizabeth Neeld as well as RBI singles from Thiyanis Santiago and Isabel Quintanilla during that frame.

Carey brought the Bearcats to within 4-3 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bearcats, however, left two runners on base when the game ended an inning later.

Olivia DeCiste raised her record to 18-10 with the victory while senior pitcher Olivia Kennedy fell to 6-8 with the defeat.

Payne and freshman outfielder Megan Wolf each posted a pair of hits in the opener.

Against Bryant, the Bearcats scored five runs in each of the first two innings to blow the game open. After Carey's lead off home run in the first inning, senior Emma Lawson singled home a run and Dodig followed with a two-run triple. The key hits in the second inning were a two-run single by Kopec and an RBI single by Minnichbach.

Junior pitched Delaney Glover - who toss three scoreless innings in relief during the first game - went the full five innings against Bryant. In addition to improving to 4-6. The loss was tagged to Maddy Watcher, whose record is now 11-6.

Carey, Kopec and graduate student outfielder Darien McDonough each collected a pair of hits in the final game.

With two doubles during the day, Binghamton now has a program-best 84 doubles this season. The previous record of 83 doubles was set two seasons ago.
