Men’s soccer edged 3-2 at Lafayette

Topp and Randazzo net Bearcat goals

EASTON, Pa. – Host Lafayette (1-0-1) scored a pair of goals in the opening 22 minutes and held off a valiant rally by Binghamton (0-2-1) during its 3-2 victory in a non-conference men's soccer match on Wednesday evening at Gummeson Grounds. The game was the Bearcats' third contest in seven days.

The Bearcats put forth their best offensive performance of the young season. They outshot the Leopards 13-4 and nearly rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second half. Scoring the Bearcats' goals were sophomore forward Henry Topp in the 41st minute and senior forward Anthony Randazzo in the 76th minute.

"We had a disappointing start to the match but I was extremely proud of the response and fight of our guys," interim head coach Tommy Moon said. "We didn't shut down when we were down by two goals and we played an outstanding second half. Everyone who made the trip today showed a lot of fight and grit."

The Leopards built their 2-0 lead on goals by Noah Amankulor in the second minute and Roy Biegon exactly 20 minutes later. Topp's goal, however, sliced the deficit in half and was the first score of his career. He took a pass from senior midfielder Itai Levisman and fired it into the net from close range.

In the second half, the Binghamton defense held Lafayette to just a single shot. That shot, however, came on a successful penalty kick by Samir Dishnica in the 68th minute, padding the Leopards' lead to 3-1.

Randazzo's unassisted goal, meanwhile, brought the Bearcats to within 3-2 and was the 11th score of his career. It came on a put back from inside the box.

Over the final 10 minutes of play, the Bearcats fired another two shots and took a corner kick. They were, however, unable to level the score.

Lafayette goalkeeper Harrison Wolfrom made four saves in the winning effort.

Shots on goal favored Binghamton 6-4 as did possession percentage (52-48) and corner kicks (6-1).

Binghamton is off until next Wednesday, when it hosts Colgate in a 6:07 p.m. match.
