Men’s Soccer Defeated 3-1 at No. 20 Cornell

Conti scores Bearcats’ goal in 84th minute

ITHACA – No. 20 Cornell (4-2-0) netted three first-half goals and held off Binghamton (1-4-3) 3-1 in a non-conference men's soccer match on Tuesday night at Berman Field. The Big Red are the first nationally-ranked team that the Bearcats have faced this season.

Cornell got goals from Sergio Zapata in the 11th minute, Lennon Harrington in the 31st minute and Nate Hovan in the 42nd minute to take a 3-0 lead into the half. Connor Miller assisted on the first two goals.

Binghamton, however, got the lone goal of the second half when redshirt sophomore back Ryan Conti scored in the 84th minute. He took a pass from sophomore forward Henry Topp and fired the ball into the lower left corner of the net. It was the first goal of Conti's career.

"We made some adjustments and were able to play a lot better in the second half," head coach Tommy Moon said. "It was frustrating that we had to go through the first half to get the performance we got in the second half. Still, we learned this week that we can play at the level of teams such as Cornell and Hofstra if we can put together a full 90 minutes. That is what we are going to keep working on as we prepare for conference play."

Cornell finished with a 19-5 shot advantage, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Natan Jemaneh Admassu finished with five saves for the Bearcats.

Binghamton opens America East play at NJIT on Saturday at 7 p.m.
