Men’s Soccer Edged by NJIT 2-1 in AE opener

Nahim nets Bearcats' goal

NEWARK, N.J. – Luan Lazoja headed in a corner kick in the 56th minute, lifting NJIT (4-4-1, 1-0-0 AE) to a 2-1 victory over Binghamton (1-5-3, 0-1-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field. The game marked the third straight road contest for the Bearcats.

Binghamton opened the scoring in the 25th minute on a goal by senior forward Marcus Nahim. He finished off a possession that began with redshirt freshman Zach Bonuito dribbling the ball across midfield. He fired a long pass to senior forward Anthony Randazzo who one-timed a pass to Nahim inside the box. Nahim then slid by the defense and converted his first goal of the season.

In the 44th minute, however, the Highlanders got the equalizer. Jake Rubis scored off a rebound from close range. The assist was credited to Itay Soffer.

Lazoja's goal, which was the eventual game winner, was set up by Telmo Vila's corner kick.

NJIT held a 27-11 shot advantage - including an 11-6 lead in shots on goal.

"We had some good moments tonight and had a great first goal but we took our foot of the gas after that," head coach Tommy Moon said. "We didn't play our style tonight and we have to figure out how to improve this next week. NJIT was a little more dangerous than we were and they (generated) a lot of corner kicks."

In goal, senior Natan Jemaneh Admassu made a career-high nine saves.

Binghamton travels to New Hampshire next Saturday for a 7 p.m. conference match.
