The winningest coach in program history, Kevin McKeown (pronounced muh-CUE-in) enters his 11th full season at the helm of the Binghamton men’s lacrosse team in 2027.
McKeown, who was named the head coach on July 18, 2016, has been selected as the America East Coach of the Year twice during his tenure (2017, 22) after previously becoming the first men's lacrosse player at Binghamton to earn All-America honors in 2004.
A former netminder himself, McKeown has helped develop some of the greatest goalies in program history. Recently, he oversaw Connor Winters become the first Binghamton men's lacrosse player in program history to be named Goalkeeper of the Year by the America East Conference in 2026. That was the culmination of a decorated career for Winters, a three-time America East all-conference selection, who set the program records for career saves (701), saves in a season (194 in 2023) and saves in a game (22 vs. Vermont on April 26, 2025). Before Winters became the starting goalie at Binghamton, McKeown helped mentor Teddy Dolan, who became the program's all-time leader in saves per game at 13.41.
McKeown has led the Bearcats to five appearances in the America East Men's Lacrosse Championship, with their most recent appearance coming in 2025. Led by an explosive, record-setting offense, his 2023 team produced their most wins in six seasons and tied for second among eight in the America East standings. In the tournament semifinals, Binghamton scored a program-record 11 goals but came up one short against eventual champion Bryant. Binghamton had the top two point producers in the conference in senior midfielder Thomas Greenblatt and sophomore attack Matthew Keegan. Greenblatt was named All-American by three different organizations after tallying a program-record 35 assists. He added 23 goals and was the America East Offensive Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection. Greenblatt finished the season ranked eighth in the NCAA in assists per game (2.50). Keegan led the conference with 47 goals - one off the school record. He topped the America East in goals and points per game and ranked seventh in the nation in goals per game (3.37). Redshirt freshman Connor Winters joined Greenblatt and Keegan on the America East first team and ranked seventh in the nation in saves per game (13.86) and 10th in save percentage (.542). He recorded a program-record 194 saves. Senior faceoff specialist Matthew DeSouza ranked ninth in the nation with a 62% success rate. In all, BU had five all-conference selections. One of the team's most compelling wins was a 15-14 slugfest over nine-time America East champion Albany on Senior Day. Of the team's five losses, three were by two or fewer goals.
In 2022, McKeown's Bearcats earned the No. 2 seed for the America East men's lacrosse tournament after being picked fifth out of seven teams in the preseason poll. The team produced back-to-back wins over fellow tournament teams UAlbany (18-10) and UMBC (12-8), while having seven of its players receive America East all-conference honors.
McKeown's 2017 squad set a program record for wins in a season (11) and advanced to the America East championship game for just the second time in Binghamton lacrosse history. The Bearcats finished the season ranked eighth in the country in scoring defense (8.19 GAA) and fourth in man down defense (.789). In addition, McKeown was named America East Coach of the Year while two members of the 2017 team were named USILA Honorable Mention All-Americans and three were named to the America East First-Team.
McKeown is currently in his second stint as the Head Coach of Binghamton men's lacrosse. After getting a masters degree at Elmira College in 2008, McKeown returned to Binghamton to serve as the defensive coordinator and goalie coach from 2008-2011. He eventually took over as the interim head coach during the 2011 campaign, and guided a team picked to finish last in the preseason poll to a second-pace finish in the regular season.
Prior to his latest return to Binghamton, McKeown was the defensive coordinator at Bellarmine University for two seasons. At Bellarmine, he helped the Knights secure their first-ever postseason berth in his final season. In 2013, he was the defensive coordinator at Siena and coached an All-MAC defensemen and tutored a goalkeeper who played in the 2013 USILA North-South game.
A native of Brewster, New York, McKeown is one of the most decorated athletes in Binghamton lacrosse history. He earned USILA All-America honors in 2004 as the anchor for one of the top defenses in the nation. That season, Binghamton allowed no more than eight goals in conference play and won its first America East regular season championship in program history. He went on to take all-conference awards three times in his career and picked up Scholar All-America connotation in 2006. As of 2026, McKeown still holds the program records for career goals against average (7.99), career save percentage (.557), career wins (24), single-season save percentage (.607 in 2003) and single-season goals against average (7.03 in 2004).
McKeown went on to spend two seasons as a member of the Rochester Rattlers in Major League Lacrosse from 2007-08. He was ultimately inducted into the Binghamton Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014, the first men's lacrosse player to receive that honor.
