VESTAL, N.Y. -- Sophomore midfielder Pete Caringi converted a penalty kick in the 41st minute, leading UMBC to a 1-0 win over Binghamton in an America East Conference men’s soccer game on Tuesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The match marked the first of a season-high, three-game home stand for the Bearcats.

Despite the final score, Binghamton outshot the visiting Retrievers 11-2. The only other shot for UMBC other than the decisive penalty kick was on a free kick late in the second half.

Although the Bearcats outshot UMBC 7-0 in the opening 40 minutes, they were called for a foul inside their own penalty kick. Caringi converted the kick, giving him a team-best four games for the season.

In the final 20 minutes of regulation, Binghamton made a furious attempt to tie the game with four more shots on goal. In the end, however, they were unable to find the back of the net.

“I thought we played more than well enough to come out of here with three points,” head coach Paul Marco said. “It is unfortunate that we did not get any. We were a little unlucky tonight.”

Dan Louisignau made four saves for UMBC in recording the shutout. Other than the penalty shot, sophomore goalkeeper Chris Hayen did not face any shots on goal.

The Bearcat backline of freshmen Jamie Forbes and Derrick Ladeairous sophomore Kevin Bunce and junior Trey Jasenski allowed their fewest shots on goal this season.

Binghamton returns to action against Albany at home on Saturday at 7 p.m.
