TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Binghamton softball team (1-5) lost a pair of games at the opening day of the Arizona State/Wilson DeMarini Invitational on Friday. After losing 3-2 in 10 innings to East Carolina, the Bearcats fell 9-1 to the third-ranked Sun Devils in five innings. The game against Arizona State marked Binghamton's first game against a nationally-ranked opponent during its 12-year NCAA Division I era.

East Carolina 3, Binghamton 2 (9 innings)

Jill Jelnick singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, propelling East Carolina (7-8) to victory. It marked the Bearcats' (1-4) second extra-inning game of the season.

The Bearcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips triple home the first run and scored one batter later on a RBI single by freshman catcher Lisa Cadogan.

East Carolina, however, matched Binghamton with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Alex Fieldhouse singled home the first run and tied the game later in the frame when she scored on an error.

Both teams had chances to keep the game from going into extra innings. Binghamton left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning. The Pirates, however, left a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Junior pitcher Demi Laney went the first six innings, allowing two runs (one unearned) on six hits and striking out five batters. Senior pitcher Kate Price came in during the bottom of the seventh inning. Although she was tagged with the loss, the winning run was unearned because the international tiebreaker rule was in effect (with a runner being placed on second base at the start of an extra inning).

Sarah Christian, who pitched all nine inning, improved her record to 6-3. Price falls to 0-2.

Junior outfielder Colleen Dougherty went 2-for-4, tying her career high for hits in a game. She also had a pair of hits against Stony Brook on April 29, 2012.

Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh, who scored on Phillips' triple, finished the game 1-for-2 and also drew a pair of walks.

No. 3 Arizona State 9, Binghamton 1 (5 innings)

Alexis Cooper scattered one run on two hits and struck out three batters as third-ranked Arizona State improved to 18-0 overall.

The Sun Devils plated three runs in each of the first three innings. Cheyenne Coyle and Nikki Gerard each drove in a pair of runs.

Junior pinch hitter Chelsey Locatell drove in the Bearcats' lone run in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single. Scoring on the play was Cadogan, who had Binghamton's other hit.

Cadogan finished the day 2-for-6 with a run and a RBI.

The Bearcats take on North Dakota at 11 a.m. and No. 20 Baylor at 4 p.m. on Saturday as play continues at the Arizona State/Wilson DeMarini Invitational.
