Shultz Shines as Volleyball Falls at New Hampshire Friday

DURHAM, N.H.- The Binghamton volleyball team fell, 3-0, at New Hampshire Friday night. The Bearcats put up a strong fight, but dropped the America East match to the league-leading Wildcats by scores of 25-23, 25-23, and 25-10 at Lundholm Gymnasium.

In the first game, freshman Erin Shultz led BU's attack. She tallied an early kill and then combined with Kristella Morina for a block, pulling the Bearcats within 7-5. She later posted another point, and after a UNH error, Sarah Ngo set up Morina for a kill, tying the set at 8.

Shultz recorded two more kills and a block assist to get Binghamton within a point at 17-16. Gabby Alicea later scored to tie it and Shultz followed with an ace to give BU a 19-18 edge. Ngo and Alicea each produced a kill to keep the Wildcats at bay as the game drew closer to a conclusion. Alicea scored and then Ngo found Shultz for a kill, making it 24-23 UNG. The hosts came up with the ensuing point, though, taking a 1-0 match advantage. Shultz put up seven points and collected six digs in the frame.

In the second set, Binghamton tested UNH again. Two Shultz kills gave BU an early margin. Ngo and Bianca Anderson teamed up for a block to make it 8-5, but the home team rallied. Shultz scored twice and then Alicea generated a pair of kills to put Binghamton ahead, 17-16. Ngo assisted on points by Alicea and Anderson to keep pace with New Hampshire.

With UNH up, 21-20, Ngo hit Shultz for consecutive points to put the Bearcats back ahead. After a UNH point, Morina scored for a 23-22 edge. The Wildcats scored the next three points, however, escaping with another tight win for a 2-0 match difference. The hosts followed with a win in the third game to stay unbeaten in America East action in 2015.

Shultz finished with 14 points, hitting .273 on the night. She added 11 digs. Ngo registered 29 assists and 10 digs. Alicea put up 12 points and 9 digs, while Kasey Muchnicki compiled 11 digs.

BU (5-18, 2-6 AE) returns to action on Sunday, playing at Hartford. The America East contest is scheduled for a noon start.
