Volleyball Falls at Stony Brook Friday Night

STONY BROOK, N.Y.- The Binghamton volleyball team fell, 3-0, at Stony Brook Friday night. Sarah Ngo notched 30 assists in the America East match, which the Seawolves took by scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-23 at Pritchard Gymnasium.

After a slow start, Binghamton rallied with an 11-1 spurt to take an early lead in the first set. Stony Brook grabbed a 5-1 advantage, but then Kristella Morina and Megan Burgess served out a run to give BU a lead. Ngo found Erin Shultz for a pair of kills and then Morina posted consecutive aces. After a Seawolves point, Ngo hit Bianca Anderson for a kill, tying the game at 6. The hosts committed an error and then Shultz scored. Burgess followed with an ace, forcing a Stony Brook timeout. Burgess came back with another ace, making it 10-6. The home team then erred and then Shultz and Anderson put down a block for a 12-6 margin, capping the Bearcats' run.

As the set continued, Shultz and Anderson each scored to keep BU ahead. Up 16-14, Ngo assisted on kills by Morina and Burgess. The Seawolves responded with five straight points and eventually took a 22-19 lead. Kills by Burgess and Anderson kept Binghamton alive, but an ace gave Stony Brook a 25-21 win in the opener.

The second frame was a back and forth affair, as the teams traded points in the early going. Ngo hit Morina for two kills and then Anderson scored twice, pulling BU within 5-4. The hosts took a 13-7 difference, but Morina tried to keep her team in the set, recording a kill and then an ace. Anderson and Shultz each scored, and eventually, Bailey Walker assisted on a Ngo kill, making it 17-13. Ngo later found Anderson for a point, but it wasn't enough, as Stony Brook won, 25-18, to take a 2-0 match advantage.

Anderson scored to start the third set, but the Seawolves rallied with five consecutive points. Ngo hit Shultz for a kill and then Walker served an ace to inch BU closer. Trailing 9-4, Binghamton looked to get back into the action. Morina scored and then SBU made a pair of errors. The hosts scored, but Kelly Leach assisted on a Gabby Alicea kill, making it 10-8.

Anderson sparked a quick 3-0 spurt, scoring and then blocking along with Shultz and Burgess to get the Bearcats within 13-12 midway through the frame. Shultz registered two kills, and after a Seawolves score, Ngo found Morina to even the score at 15. BU took several one-point edges, as Kaelan Haag hit Morina for an 18-17 lead and then an SBU miscue gave Binghamton a 19-18 margin.

Stony Brook claimed four points in a row, but then Ngo logged assists to Alicea, Shultz, and Morina to keep Binghamton in it. A Seawolves error pulled BU within a point, but a Bearcat miscue ended the match at 25-23.

Ngo tallied 30 assists. Morina finished with 12 points, hitting .563 on the night, and generating three aces. Shultz added 11 points and Anderson scored 10. Walker provided nine digs.
