VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Army (2-0) hit 11 three-pointers and kept Binghamton basketball (0-2) at bay in a 75-60 win Sunday afternoon at the Events Center.
In their home opener, the Bearcats put four players in double figures but missed 14 free throws and couldn't rally from a 12-point halftime deficit.
"I thought it was a very good performance by Army," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "We came in ready to go but they played like veterans and were poised on the road. I thought we did some good things. We got to the line 33 times but the missed free throws really hurt us, especially in the first half. We're working hard to get more comfortable and move the ball better on offense, but I thought we did attack them well. We just didn't shoot it very well."
Freshman guard
Everson Davis tallied a team-high 14 points with four assists and sophomore forward
Willie Rodriguez added 13 points and six rebounds. Freshman center
Thomas Bruce showed his talent with 11 points, five rebounds and his third blocked shot in two collegiate games. Sophomore center
Dusan Perovic added 10 points in 19 minutes of work.
Army used an early 15-3 run to jump out to a 17-7 lead just 5:47 into the game. The Black Knights hit seven three-pointers in the opening period and carried a 42-30 cushion into intermission.
In the second half, Davis netted 11 of his 14 points but BU could draw no closer than six. Bruce made two free throws just 1:29 into the second period to pull the Bearcats to within six, 42-36. But Army responded with a three-pointer and the visitors never allowed BU to make any kind of extended run.
Senior forward Tanner Plomb scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead a steady Army attack.
Binghamton finishes off a three-games-in-six-days stretch with a road game Wednesday at Cornell.
