STONY BROOK, N.Y. -Â Binghamton outhit Stony Brook 10-6 but left nine stranded and came up short in the nightcap 6-3, suffering a twinbill sweep at the hands of the Seawolves Saturday afternoon at chilly Joe Nathan Field. The hosts won the opener 8-3. The two teams will complete the three-game set with a single game at noon on Monday.
In Game 2, BU battled back to tie the game at 3-3, thanks to single runs in the fourth and fifth innings of the seven-inning affair. But Stony Brook plated three decisive runs on just one hit in the bottom of the fifth, cashing in on four walks and an error to build its winning cushion.
The Bearcats still had chances to rally in the sixth and seventh, however, but couldn't capitalize on five baserunners. In the sixth, BU loaded the bases with no outs but a 1-2-3 double play and fly ball squashed the threat. In their final at-bat, the Bearcats put runners on first and third with one out but back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.
Junior second baseman
Reed Gamache went 3-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore catcher
Eddie Posavec was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Gamache's single up the middle in the first inning scored senior center fielder
Zach Blanden with the game's first run. Gamache also delivered a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning to score sophomore left fielder
Darian Herncane and tie the game at 3-3. Posavec's key hit was a two-out RBI single in the fourth that scored sophomore first baseman
Brendan Skidmore, who had led off with a double.
Junior
Mike Bunal (L, 1-2) went 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on four hits.
In the opener, it was a scoreless pitcher's duel for four innings before the Bearcats blinked first in the fifth. Stony Brook loaded the bases with two out and a two-run single gave the hosts a 2-0 lead. Stony Brook added a run in the sixth on one hit, a walk and an outfield error and then the Seawolves broke it open with four runs – three unearned – in the seventh. Binghamton committed three errors in the frame and four for the game.
The Bearcats got three runs back in the ninth – more than doubling their hit total in their final at-bat – but it wasn't enough. Freshman catcher
Jason Agresti hit an RBI double, Posavec followed with RBI groundout and senior first baseman
Brian Ruby plated the final run with a single.
Junior
Rob Hardy ( 1-2) went 6.1 innings and allowed six hits and three earned runs. Hardy gave up just one hit through the first four scoreless innings and was the hard-luck loser. He is sporting a 3.92 ERA in four starts this spring.
Binghamton put runners on base in six of the first seven innings, including the leadoff hitter in four of those frames, but couldn't break through against SBU starter Tyler Honahan, who allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings.
Seven different Bearcats had one hit apiece.Â
