VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton volleyball fell, 3-2, to Cornell Tuesday night. The Big Red won by scores of 21-25, 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, and 15-9 in the non-conference match at the West Gym. Freshman
Lauren Kornmann scored a career-high 20 points in the contest.

The teams battled to a split through four sets, with the Bearcats claiming wins in the opener and then the fourth game. In the tiebreaking fifth, Kornmann scored to start the action.
Lexi LaGoy followed with a kill, but Cornell went on a 4-0 run to go ahead, 5-2. After a BU timeout,
Kaelan Haag, making her first career start, hit
Gaby Alicea for a kill. Senior
Kasey Muchnicki recorded consecutive aces to tie the set at 5.

The visitors responded with three straight points, but kills by Alicea and
Kristella Morina kept Binghamton close. Cornell answered with four more points, and after a Kornmann kill, the Big Red scored to close out the bout at 15-9.

In the first game, Kornmann started well, notching two early kills. Alicea and
Bianca Anderson teamed up for a block as Binghamton grabbed a 7-4 advantage. Cornell tied the set, but Haag found
Erin Shultz and then Kornmann for points. Another Alicea-Anderson block made it 14-13, and after a pair of Big Red errors, BU had a slim margin. Kornmann tallied a kill and then served an ace to stretch the lead. The visitors came back with four straight scores, but Haag assisted on an Alicea kill for a 19-18 edge. Cornell evened the set at 20, but Shultz scored and then the Big Red made four miscues down the stretch, allowing the Bearcats to win, 25-21.

After Cornell won the ensuing two frames, Binghamton needed to rally. Kornmann provided a spark to open the fourth set, logging four kills as BU got out to a 5-2 lead. Morina scored twice later in the game and then Haag hit Kornmann for two more kills and a 13-10 margin. Cornell got within 15-13, but the Bearcats responded with a 5-0 spurt to take control. Shultz and Morina each scored and after two Cornell errors, Shultz added another kill for a 20-13 difference.

The visitors made a run to get within 22-20, forcing a BU timeout. Kornmann scored, Cornell erred, and then Haag set up LaGoy for a kill on set point, forcing a fifth frame.

Kornmann finished with a career-high 20 points, including 19 kills. Haag posted personal bests with 44 assists, 17 digs, and three kills.
Bailey Walker compiled 21 digs, while
Kelly Leach contributed 14 digs in her first start of the year. Alicea scored 13 points, while Shultz and Morina each generated nine points.

BU is now 1-1 in five-set matches in 2016. Binghamton (8-11) hosts New Hampshire in America East action on Friday. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the West Gym.
