Volleyball Knocks Off New Hampshire, 3-1, Friday Night

VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton volleyball took down New Hampshire, 3-1, Friday night at the West Gym. The Bearcats beat the three-time defending America East champions by scores of 25-16, 22-25, 25-23, and 25-19, in front of 468 raucous fans.

Junior Sarah Ngo recorded 44 assists and 26 digs and senior Bailey Walker posted 27 digs and 7 assists to ignite the Bearcats, who defeated UNH for the first time since 2012 and snapped the Wildcats' 16-match road winning streak. BU won the America East title in the 2012 season.

Holding a 2-1 match advantage, Binghamton looked to close out the match in the fourth. The visitors grabbed a 3-1 lead, but BU rallied with a 6-1 spurt to take control. Ngo found Gaby Alicea for a kill and then UNH committed two errors. The Wildcats then scored, but logged three more miscues, including a Kristella Morina block as Binghamton went up, 7-4. Lauren Kornmann scored twice around a Morina ace as the hosts took an 11-9 advantage.

An Alicea kill and Morina block extended the margin and then Erin Shultz scored twice. Ngo and Morina followed with a block to make it 20-14. Kornmann notched two kills and then Alicea and Anderson went up for a block. After a UNH error made it match point, Ngo assisted on a Kornmann kill to end the match in BU's favor.

Coach Glenn Kiriyama's squad came out ready to play, rolling to a 25-16 win in the opening frame. Kornmann scored start the action, and after a UNH point, Binghamton scored four in a row. Alicea and Shultz each scored, while the Wildcats made two errors. Later in the game, Anderson and Kornmann combined for a block and then Kornmann finished a Ngo assist for a 12-9 advantage.

After the Wildcats got within 15-14, Walker led an 8-0 run to gain momentum. Ngo found Alicea for a kill and then the duo switched roles for another point. Walker set up a Shultz kill, forcing a UNH timeout. Morina followed with a kill and two blocks and then Walker assisted on another Shultz kill for a 23-14 margin. Alicea served an ace on set point as BU claimed a 1-0 match lead.

The visitors won the second game, setting up a vital third frame. It swayed back and forth as UNH went ahead, 12-9, midway through the game. BU took advantage of a Wildcat service error, as Walker logged an ace and then set up a Shultz kill to even the score. Alicea scored, Morina and Shultz put down a block, and Alicea generated another ace for a 15-13 difference.

Two Morina points continued the Bearcats' strong play, as Ngo followed with assists to Kornmann and Anderson for a 19-15 lead.
