VESTAL, N.Y.—The Binghamton swimming & diving program produced it's second straight home sweep today at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center. The women defeated Colgate 150-144 and VMI 247-27, while the men bested Colgate 192-100 and VMI 183-101.
"It was a gutsy win," remarked head coach
Brad Smith. "For the women it came down to the wire against Colgate. They locked up first place in a lot of events but we were able to stay tough and clog up the middle, and we were able to stay in it going down to those last few events."
MEN
Binghamton took first in 12 of 16 events. First the 200 medley relay of
Zachary Kaplan,
Thomas Mackey,
Eric Wang, and
Alex Brion got things started with a time of 1:37.02. Individual winners include
Max Willard in the 1000 (10:19.69),
Cooper Langanis in the 200 free (1:45.72),
Thomas Mackey in the 100 breast (1:00.63) and 200 breast (2:15.46),
Ross Bernstein in the 200 fly (1:56.71) and 500 free (4:57.27),
Alex Brion in the 50 free (21.80) and 100 free (48.17),
Ryan O'Connell in the one-meter (271.35) and three-meter (267.15) diving, and
Tyler Meyers in the 200 back (1:57.17).
WOMEN
The women also took the 200 medley relay thanks to the effort of
Sarah-Jane Wied,
Sydney Atendido,
Katherine Scott, and
Courtney Foley (1:49.89). Atendido picked up the next win in the 100 breast (1:08.61) with teammate
Maria Trivino finishing second. Trailing heading into event 13, the Bearcats turned the tide by taking the top three places in the 50 free.
Courtney Foley led the way at 25.09, followed by
Olivia Santos and
Kaitlyn Lange. The same players took places two through four in the 100 free to capture crucial points for Binghamton. Trivino (2:28.80) and
Rebecca Nelson took the top two spots in the 200 breast, and
Brooke Pettis won the 100 fly.
Jaime Campbell won both diving events with 194.03 in the one-meter and 197.69 in the three-meter.
Smith emphasized the importance of not only the wins in a close meet, but the secondary efforts to tack on to the Bearcats' score as well.
"We've come a long way," reflected Smith. "We're really developing a culture as a team to where they understand that there's support all around, and that one bad event doesn't mean that it's over. They understand that every next event provides another opportunity for them."
The Bearcats will now set their sights on Canisius, as they travel there on November 19 for the final event of the fall semester.
