VESTAL, N.Y. - Juniors
Bobby Ahearn and
Dusan Perovic scored 19 points apiece and Binghamton men's basketball (5-4) topped the 90-point mark for the second time this season, defeating Mansfield (3-2) 91-71 Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
The Bearcats put four players in double figures and shot 54 percent to pull away from the Mounties, who received a game-high 25 points from Malik Carter.
"It was a good win at home," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "It's nice to be 3-0 at home and to get a fifth win, still in the month of November. We've played a lot of games in a short period of time and we've leaned on everyone. We're playing without guys and others are banged up but everybody has stepped up and contributed. Wins are important ... to be able to taste success early in the season is important for our growth."
Ahearn netted 17 of his points in the second half and also pulled down a game-high 10 boards to record his second career double-double. He shot 7-of-9, including a three-pointer, and added four free throws in 28 minutes. Perovic also hit 7-of-9, including 3-of-5 accuracy from three-point range. He did his damage in just 18 minutes of action as BU subbed liberally and enjoyed a 34-6 scoring advantage from its bench.
Sophomore guard
Everson Davis scored six of his 17 points in the opening five minutes when BU raced out to an 18-5 lead. Davis wound up shooting 6-of-10 en route to a season-high 17 points. Ahearn and sophomore center
Thomas Bruce (14 pts., 8 rebs.) each had five points during the opening run.
Binghamton led 41-29 with 3:55 to play in the first half before Mansfield scored 12 of the final 19 points to trim its deficit to seven at the break, 48-41. The Bearcats' lead was only five, 62-57, with 13:01 remaining before Davis sparked a decisive 27-7 run with back-to-back three-pointers. Perovic began the three-point barrage and Davis followed, giving BU three treys in a 1:41 span. Veteran guards
Marlon Beck and
Yosef Yacob added daggers during the run, which saw BU's lead swell to 89-64 with 3:52 left.
The Bearcats, who have alternated wins and losses over the season's first nine games, hit the road again for a Saturday night tilt at St. Francis (Pa.).
