VESTAL, N.Y. - Freshman guard
Fard Muhammad hit 5-of-7 three-pointers and keyed a big first-half run and Binghamton men's basketball (8-5) pulled away early from visiting Delaware State (3-9), 85-66, Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
The win was BU's fourth in the last five games and establishes the program record for most non-conference wins in a season. The team's eighth win also matches last season's entire win total before BU even begins conference play.
Muhammad, who tied his season high with 16 points, drilled four three-pointers in a 4:12 span to key a 26-6 BU run that turned a 7-7 deadlock into a 33-13 Bearcats cushion midway through the first half. He had 12 points in the run and junior forward
Justin McFadden added five. Redshirt junior guard
Yosef Yacob scored 13 of his 14 points in the decisive first half as BU built a 46-20 margin, thanks to 64 percent shooting.
In the second half, sophomore guard
Everson Davis scored all 10 of his points and head coach
Tommy Dempsey spread the minutes as 12 players wound up reaching the scoring column and 11 received double-digit minutes. Binghamton's bench produced 46 points in the game - the 10th time in 13 games that BU has had the edge in bench scoring.
Binghamton led by as many as 29 points before settling on the 19-point cushion. The Bearcats shot a season-high 61 percent from the floor.
"This was an important win," Dempsey said. "We've had a tough week ... the combination of losing the big lead against Loyola, players having to get right into finals and then finding out mid-week that we lost J.C. (Show) for the year. So there was a lot going on that could've been a distraction. But our players prepared well ... they were locked in at practice these last few days. It was important to make a statement that we're still a very good team and that all of our goals are still achievable."
The Bearcats next travel to West Point for a Wednesday night contest against Army.
