Softball Drops Pair of Games in Opening Day of Stetson Classic

Bearcats lose 8-7 to host Hatters in eight innings, 3-1 to Wagner

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DELAND, Fla. -- The Binghamton softball team (5-6) lost both of its games in the first day of the Stetson Classic on Friday evening at Hatter Field. The Bearcats fell 8-7 in eight innings to the host squad (18-10) in the first game and were nipped 3-1 by Wagner (5-8) in the finale.

Against Stetson, the Bearcats were down 7-6 in the top of the seventh inning when senior designated player Griffin McIver tied the score with a one-out home run over the right field fence.  Senior pitcher Cara Martin set the Hatters down in order in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Bearcats left the bases loaded. Stetson then finished the game in the bottom of the frame on a one-out RBI single by Jessie Tenbroeck.

Tori Perkins improved to 3-1 with the win while Martin dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

Sophomore outfielder Jessica Rutherford reached base all five times in the first game, going 3-for-3 and walking twice. Junior outfielder Gabby Bracchi finished 2-for-4, drew a pair of walks and scored two runs.

Senior first baseman Lisa Cadogan drove in a team-best two runs, going 2-for-5 in the process.

Binghamton pounded out 10 hits but left 11 runners on base.

Both teams struggled in the field, each committing three errors. Three of the runs the Bearcats allowed were unearned.

The bats were quieter in the second game as Binghamton could only muster up three hits against Wagner.

Cadogan broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a one-out solo home run over the left field fence. The Seahawks, however, tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on a throwing error.

The Bearcat miscues continued in the top of the seventh inning as Wagner tacked on two more unearned runs. Binghamton then went down in order in the bottom of the frame.

Despite going the distance and not allowing an earned run, Martin was tagged with the loss again. McKaleigh Goodale, meanwhile, improved to 4-2 with the victory.

Bracchi and Cadogan were the only Binghamton players to hit safely in both games.

Binghamton continues play at the Stetson Classic on Saturday with games against Tennessee-Martin (4:00 p.m.) and a rematch against Wagner (6:30 p.m.).
