Men's Lacrosse Ties School Record With 16 Goals in Win over UMBC

VESTAL N.Y.- The Binghamton men's lacrosse team used a six-goal third quarter to fuel a 16-10 win over UMBC Saturday afternoon. BU tied a single-game school record with 16 goals in the America East opener at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

After taking a 6-4 halftime lead, the Bearcats put together a dominant stretch in the third quarter, scoring six goals to take control of the contest. UMBC scored to start the frame, but Joe Licata responded with his third goal of the day at the 11:41 mark. Dan Mazurek won the following faceoff and sprinted in, hitting Thomas McAndrew for a goal and an 8-5 advantage. The score came just five seconds after Licata's.

After the visitors scored, Binghamton recorded a 4-0 spurt to pull away from its opponent. With 11:03 left in the third, Johnny Maher set up a goal, finding Kyle Urban, who then hit McAndrew for the score. Kocis followed with a goal and a 10-6 difference. A little over a minute later, T.J. DiSanto assisted on a Maher goal to expand the lead. Scaduto capped the run with a goal, set up by Kocis, with 5:35 left in the third. In the period, Mazurek won 6-9 faceoffs as the Bearcats maintained possession for the majority of the frame.

Binghamton moved to 1-0 in the America East. It will step back outside of the league for its next two games before heading to Hartford on Saturday, April 2, for another conference contest.

The Bearcats cashed in on an extra-man opportunity early in the game. After a Retriever penalty, Kocis hit McAndrew with a solid feed for a point-blank goal, putting BU ahead, 1-0, with 9:29 left in the period. Mazurek won the ensuring faceoff and less than a minute, Scaduto found the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

Later in the quarter, Binghamton capitalized on a lengthy possession, shooting four times. The fourth attempt came from Licata, who scored from Kocis for a 3-0 lead with 4:26 remaining in the frame. UMBC finally got on the board with nine seconds to go, cutting its deficit to 3-1 after 15 minutes.

In the second period, BU had to fend off UMBC man-up chance, as Tanner Cosens came up with a save. After a Retriever turnover, Kocis scored for a 4-1 margin at the 11:23 mark. A few minutes later, Kocis made a move behind the net and found Licata, who scored from straight on to give Binghamton a 5-1 lead with 7:08 left in the first half.

After a pair of UMBC (1-4, 0-1 AE) goals, Scaduto answered. Licata found the senior on the left side, where Scaduto wound up and fired a blast into the net, making it 6-3 with 1:37 to play in the half. The visitors scored in the final minute to get closer as BU headed into the locker room with a 6-4 lead.

BU followed with its terrific third quarter to take over the match. In the fourth, Scaduto found Matthew Kaser with a stellar pass, setting up a score with 11:36 to go. UMBC then scored, but Kaser notched his second goal with 5:45 remaining, making it 14-8. Mazurek won another faceoff, eventually leading to a George Deignan goal with 5:33 left. Scaduto then tied the program record, finding the back of the net with 2:10 showing on the clock.
