VESTAL, N.Y.- The Binghamton men's lacrosse team bet Drexel, 10-7, Tuesday afternoon.
Matthew Kaser scored three goals and BU won 17-21 faceoffs in the non-conference victory at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
The Bearcats took a 7-4 halftime lead and held a 7-6 advantage through three periods. In the fourth, BU took control of the contest.
Thomas McAndrew made a move and scored with 10:31 remaining, giving the hosts an 8-6 lead. Binghamton maintained possession for much of the frame, as it put together a six-shot trip that ended with a
Liam Reaume man-up goal. McAndrew assisted on the score with 3:41 left. Drexel won the ensuing faceoff, but
George Deignan came up with a caused turnover and a groundball to regain the ball for BU.
Zach Scaduto then found
Joe Licata for a goal and a 10-6 margin with 2:01 to play, ending the match as a contest.
The visitors scored first to start the game, but McAndrew responded with a tying goal at the 6:28 mark of the first quarter. After another Dragon score, Scaduto hit Kaser for a man-up goal with 3:21 showing on the clock. Binghamton then capped the first with a
Ben Kocis goal.
Johnny Maher set him up with 24 seconds left, putting BU ahead, 3-2.
In the second period, Drexel scored to even the match, but Kaser quickly answered. Maher found Kaser moving to his right outside the crease, and Kaser caught the pass and shot over his right shoulder, beating the Dragon goalkeeper on the far side of the net for the highlight goal. Less than two minutes later, the pair teamed up for another score, as Maher assisted on Kaser's third goal of the day with 10:57 to play in the half.
Drexel scored next, but the Bearcats closed the first thirty minutes with a pair of goals. Kocis found the back of the net with 3:07 remaining and then Maher scored at the 1:55 mark, giving BU a 7-4 halftime difference. Binghamton was dominant at the 'X', as
Dan Mazurek and
Austin Macchi combined to win 12-13 faceoffs in the half.
The Dragons inched closer, scoring twice in the third frame, but
Tanner Cosens kept the opposition at bay with five saves in the period. Binghamton pulled away in the decisive fourth, clinching its second straight home win.
Kaser tallied his first career hat trick, while Maher put up a goal, three helpers, and four groundballs. McAndrew posted two goals and an assist. Mazurek won 10-13 faceoffs and Macchi claimed wins on 7-8 draws. Kocis added a pair of goals and Scaduto assisted on two others. Cosens logged 11 saves and four groundballs.
BU recorded its first win over Drexel since April 25, 2006.
Binghamton (2-4) heads to #9 Towson for another non-league match on Saturday, March 26. The game is slated for a 3 p.m. faceoff.
