VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball opens 2016 America East play this weekend up in Orono when the Bearcats (4-14) play a three-game set at Maine (5-15). The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and then finish with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Mahaney Diamond.
The Bearcats are coming off a 14-2 drubbing of Bucknell on Tuesday and have won two of their last three games. The 14 runs were a season high and marked the seventh time BU has scored seven or more runs this spring. Binghamton's pitching staff has clamped down of late and has allowed just three combined runs in the team's last three games.
Sophomore DH
Pat Britt leads BU with a .333 average. Junior catcher/outfielder
Eddie Posavec is hitting .317 and senior third baseman
David Schanz is at .310 with 10 RBI. Senior second baseman
Reed Gamache has a team-best 16 RBI.
Binghamton will start junior
Jake Cryts (0-3, 7.04 ERA) in the opener and senior
Mike Bunal (0-3, 7.43 ERA) in Saturday's second game. Sophomore
Jacob Wloczewski (1-0, 0.82) will take the hill for Sunday's finale.
Maine beat ACC power Clemson in its season-opener but has struggled since. They have two wins over New Mexico State and also have beaten LIU and Lehigh but have dropped 11 of their last 13. Freshman third baseman and leadoff hitter Danny Casals is the only player hitting above .300 (.303). Junior outfielder Tyler Schwanz has team-highs of 12 extra-base hits and 13 RBI. The Black Bears are hitting .239 as a team but have faced a tough schedule with the three games against Clemson, another against sixth-ranked Miami and four against WAC member New Mexico State.
The Black Bears will throw sophomore righty Jonah Normandeau (0-1, 3.66 ERA) in Game 1 and second-year right-hander Justin Courtney (1-1, 1.44 ERA) in Game 2. Sophomore right-hander John Arel (0-3, 5.04 ERA) is the likely starter on Sunday. Maine's pitching staff sports a solid 5.44 ERA.
In the all-time series between the two programs, Maine holds a 32-24 advantage and has won the last three. Last May in Orono, the hosts won 7-1, 3-2 and 9-0. In 2014, BU won three of four, including a 6-3 victory in the America East tournament. That win began BU's improbable run through the consolation bracket en route to the program's third conference title in six years. Maine holds a 17-6 advantage at Mahaney Diamond.Â
