VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton men's lacrosse used a 5-0 second quarter to spark a 13-12 win over Canisius Tuesday night. The Bearcats featured eight different goal-scorers in the non-conference win at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Canisius grabbed a 3-2 lead after one period, but BU took control with a dominant showing in the second quarter.
Zach Scaduto found
Matthew Kaser for a goal just 57 seconds into the frame, tying the score. A few minutes later,
Joe Licata hit Scaduto for the senior's first goal of the night, giving the hosts a 4-3 edge. Soon after that score,
Sam Sanko came up with a save and
George Deignan was on the scene to collect the ensuing groundball. The senior took off a field-length dash and fired a shot past the Golden Griffin goalie for a goal with 6:11 left in the half.
With 5:06 showing on the clock,
Johnny Maher assisted on Kaser's second goal, making it 6-3. The momentum continued as
Mitchell Rick found the back of the net with 3:04 to go, sending the Bearcats into the locker room with a 7-3 halftime advantage.
BU maintained its margin in the third, as Scaduto, Rick, and Maher each scored to put the home team ahead, 10-6, after 45 minutes. Canisius scored six goals in the fourth frame, but Bearcat tallies by
Thomas McAndrew, Scaduto, and Kaser kept the Griffins at bay and Binghamton came away with its fourth home win of 2016.
The Bearcats improved to 4-1 at home this season and defeated Canisius for the third straight year. In 2016, Binghamton is 4-6 overall heading into its match at #6 Albany Saturday. The America East contest is set for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
In the first quarter, the visitors scored to open action, but
Sam Sanko kept the Griffins from scoring a goal with a terrific sliding save. Eventually, Licata responded with a goal at the 9:02 mark. After another Griffin goal,
Ben Kocis faked out his defender to create space for a laser that found net and tied the match at 2. Canisius answered again, but BU followed its stellar second period play.
Maher recorded a goal and set a new career high with four assists. Scaduto put up a hat trick-his fourth of the season- and a helper, while Kaser notched three goals for his third hat trick of 2016. Sanko provided 12 saves to improve to 2-0 in net this year. Deignan and
Eric Schweitzer each claimed four groundballs. Licata added a goal and two assists and Rick scored twice. Kocis contributed a goal and an assist. Ryan McKee paced Canisius (3-5) with four goals.
