VESTAL, N.Y. - Coming off a big weekend sweep in conference play that kept them in first place in the America East, Binghamton baseball (14-18) turns its attention to a non-conference twinbill Wednesday afternoon at MAAC member Marist (16-15). The teams will play a pair of seven-inning games beginning at 2 p.m. at McCann Field in Poughkeepsie.
The Bearcats have won 11 of their last 15 games and at 10-2 in league play, are off to their best start in 15 seasons of America East membership. Binghamton ranks third in the conference in hitting (.280), seventh in pitching (5.60) and second in fielding (.979).Â
Over the weekend, BU swept Hartford, 5-3, 12-1 and 10-9. In Sunday's finale, BU used an improbable six-run ninth inning to post the comeback win. It was the largest ninth-inning comeback in 24-year head coach
Tim Sinicki's tenure at Binghamton.
Senior second baseman
Reed Gamache ended the affair with a two-out, walk-off single - his second hit of the inning after BU batted around. Gamache also offered a highlight-reel dive, nab and glove-toss to start a double play in Saturday's Game 2. He was named both the America East Player of the Week and BU's Athlete of the Week. He ranks third in the America East in RBI (25) and eighth in on-base percentage (.417).
Junior first baseman
Brendan Skidmore leads BU and ranks seventh in the America East in hitting (.333). He has 24 RBI. Junior outfielder/catcher
Eddie Posavec is hitting .400 in his last 10 games and has a league-best four triples. Sophomore center fielder
CJ Krowiak ranks third in the America East in both hits (42) and runs scored (27).
Freshman
Nick Gallagher (1-2, 7.53) will start the opener against Marist and sophomore
Joe Orlando (0-2, 12.19 ERA) is expected to start the nightcap.
Binghamton has dropped its last two midweek non-conference games (to Cornell and Penn State). The Bearcats are 5-5-1 all-time against Marist. Last spring in Vestal, BU won 7-3 and the teams tied 9-9 in a twinbill. The teams split two single games back in 2013.
Marist is tied for second (out of 11) in the MAAC with an 8-4 mark. After starting the season 5-10, the Red Foxes won nine of their next 11 but have since dropped three of five. Last weekend, Marist took two of three from Manhattan. They rank second in the MAAC in pitching (4.25), fifth in hitting (.253) and first in fielding (.975). Marist is 2-1 vs. America East schools this season. They defeated Albany (2-0) and UMass Lowell (6-3) before losing to Hartford (5-3) last Wednesday.
The Red Foxes advanced to the NCAA Regionals five times in a nine-year period between 2000-09. The team went 19-27-1 in 2015.Â
